Ahava Orthodontics strives to be your premier choice when you’re looking for an orthodontist in Fort Worth. We make it our goal to provide a high-quality orthodontic experience for people of all ages. Many of our patients are children or teenagers who will soon be getting ready to go back to school. As your trusted orthodontic provider, we’d like to help make that transition into the school year much easier by offering a few useful tips.

Pack Braces-Friendly Lunches

One of the things to keep in mind when you’re wearing braces is that there are foods you’ll need to avoid because of the damage they can do to a patient’s braces. Some of these foods that you’ll have to stay away from include hard foods and sticky foods. Schools won’t always provide foods that are suitable for wearers of braces so you’ll need to pack your own lunches occasionally. We recommend bringing foods like ham sandwiches, macaroni, chopped fruit and vegetables, or yogurt.

Bring a Travel Kit

It’s recommended to brush teeth after every meal when you’re wearing braces. When you’re at school though, this can prove to be a problem. However, if you bring a travel kit with you, you can brush your teeth at school as well. Your travel kit should contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, and some dental floss so you can clean your teeth after lunch when you get the opportunity. Also, you should pack some extra rubber bands or elastics if needed and also some dental wax in case your braces begin to irritate your mouth.

Drink Plenty of Water

One healthy thing you can do while wearing braces is drink plenty of water. Bringing a water bottle with you to school is a helpful way to make sure you’re getting the water you require. It won’t just keep your mouth clean, but it will fight bad breath and help prevent cavities as well.

Wear a Mouthguard During Sports

Schools require the usage of mouthguards for only a few sports such as football and hockey. However, you should also wear them for any other sports with the potential of physical contact. Dental injuries actually occur more often in basketball and baseball than any other sport. For your safety, please make sure to wear a mouthguard during these sports as well.

Use a Retainer Case

If you’re wearing a retainer, one of the most important things you can do is bring a retainer case with you. If your retainer isn’t in your mouth, make sure it’s in your retainer case. There have been many instances where a student has lost or thrown away a retainer by accident; using a retainer case and making sure it’s always secure is a good way to keep from losing it.
